What is an Astronomical Unit (AU)?

An Astronomical Unit (AU) is a unit of length*.

1AU is defined as the average (mean) distance between the Earth and the Sun. In more familiar terms, one Astronomical Unit is roughly equal to 150 million** kilometres, or 93 million*** miles.
